Why Schools Choose EDU Prime Tours: What a Retired Teacher Knows About Student Travel That Most Tour Operators Don't

Before I was a tour operator, I was a Westerville social studies teacher, coach, and Washington D.C. 8th grade trip leader. I spent 30 years in classrooms and on sidelines, managing groups of young people, working with parents, coordinating with administrators, and understanding the very specific kind of trust that schools place in the people they put in charge of their students.
That background did not go away when I retired from teaching and came onboard full time with Prime Tours in 2014. It is baked into everything we do at EDU Prime Tours, the educational tour arm of our Prime Tours brand.
Lisa Busch, who also leads Prime Tours alongside me, is a former high school English teacher and business owner. Our tour directors and guides are retired teachers, coaches, music instructors, and historians. When a school sends students on a trip with EDU Prime Tours, they are not handing those kids over to a travel company. They are working with educators who have chosen to continue their classroom post-retirement doing what they love, planning and operating some of the finest student and performance group trips in Ohio.
That distinction matters more than most schools initially realize.
What Nearly 30 Years of Student Trips Looks Like
EDU Prime Tours works with more than 20 Central Ohio schools every year. Our groups range from 12 students to 250 participants, and the destinations span the full range of what student travel can look like.
Domestically, our most traveled destination is Washington D.C., and for good reason. For history classes, civics programs, and student government groups, there is no substitute for standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, walking through the halls of the Capitol, or spending a full day in the Smithsonian museums with a guide who can put everything in context. We have taken dozens of Central Ohio school groups to D.C. over the years, and we know how to structure that trip so it is immersively educational and not just a photo opportunity.
New York City is another destination we know deeply. Whether it is a performing arts group taking in Broadway, a student journalism program visiting media outlets, or a general enrichment trip built around the city's history and culture, we have built and operated those experiences for Ohio schools at every grade level.
History-focused trips take groups to Philadelphia and the birthplace of American democracy, to Gettysburg and the Civil War battlefields, to Colonial Williamsburg for living history that textbooks simply cannot replicate. We have taken science-oriented groups to research institutions and natural history museums. We have run leadership programs to national monuments and government buildings including the National Archives and the Supreme Court Building that leave students with a sense of their place in something larger than themselves.
Internationally, our track record speaks for itself. The OSU Marching Band Ireland tour, which Prime Tours planned and operated as the official authorized tour of The Ohio State University Marching Band, is the most visible example of what we can do at the highest level of performance group travel. We have operated student and performance group trips to Ireland, coordinating with trusted incoming tour partners on the ground, to ensure every performance venue and cultural experience runs exactly as planned.
The point is not to impress with a list of destinations. The point is that when a school calls EDU Prime Tours they are working with an organization that has genuinely done this, at scale, across a wide range of trip types, for nearly three decades. There is no learning curve with us. We know what we are doing, and our schools know it too.
What EDU Prime Tours Actually Does
We are not a booking service. We do not hand you a package and wish you well. EDU Prime Tours plans and operates every trip from start to finish, and our team travels with your group the entire time.
That means a dedicated director and guide travels with your students from your school to your destination and back again. We coordinate the itinerary with your trip leaders, attend parent and student information meetings in person or via Zoom, and provide expert commentary throughout the trip or bring in local guides where appropriate.
We arrange all lodging, selecting properties that suit your group size and needs. For student trips, we go a step further: we contract with a professional security company to monitor the hotel during evening quiet time. That is not something most tour operators offer. It is something every parent sending their child on an overnight trip should ask about.
Transportation is handled completely. Charter motorcoaches, group airfare if needed, and all scheduling of admissions, tickets, reservations, and performance venues. Dining options are selected with input from your trip leaders so the food works for your group. Every student receives a lanyard and name tag. Registration and payments are collected through our secure payment provider, and travel insurance options are available including Student Deluxe coverage and Cancellation for Any Reason.
Prime Tours carries a one million dollar Liability and Errors and Omissions Insurance policy with Berkshire Hathaway. We say that not to impress you, but because it matters and because you should always ask any tour operator you work with whether they carry it.
The Performance Group Difference
Schools with performance groups, marching bands, choirs, orchestras, and other ensembles have a specific set of needs that general student tour operators are not equipped to handle. Scheduling performance venues and instrument logistics takes relationships and experience. Coordinating with receiving organizations in destination cities or countries requires trust on both sides.
EDU Prime Tours has those relationships. For international trips, we partner with established incoming tour operators in the destination country to ensure that every performance opportunity is properly scheduled and supported on the ground.
Over the years we have placed student performers on stages in cities across the country and abroad. Bands have marched in parades through historic American streets and in front of crowds overseas. Choirs have sung in venues that moved their students to tears. None of that happens without the operational experience to make it work quietly in the background, so that the students only experience the performance itself.
Why the Teacher Background Actually Matters
Here is something I always tell school administrators when we first talk: the difference between a tour operator and an educator-led tour operator is not just philosophical. It is practical.
We know how students behave on trips. We know how parents think about safety. We know what a school principal needs to hear to feel confident putting their name on a trip. We know how to communicate with students in a way that keeps them engaged and accountable. And we know how to build a trip that is genuinely educational, not just a fun excursion with some historical sites mixed in.
Our guides are retired educators. They bring context, storytelling, and genuine passion for the subjects they cover. When a student stands at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial with a guide who taught history for thirty years, the experience of reading those names is different than it would be on their own.
That is the EDU Prime Tours standard. We will make the trip both fun and educational. That is not a marketing line. That is nearly 30 years of teaching and travel combined.
